River City Lacrosse Club

A Note From Our Founder, Mike Marrapese

In order to better understand the mission of River City Lacrosse Foundation, I’d like to share my journey thus far.  Lacrosse for me on the field has been a lifelong passion, but the benefits it has brought off the field have significantly changed the course of my life.

My playing days started at Irondequoit High School (IHS), which is steeped in tradition dating back to the 1950’s; however, academically it is in no way comparable to the regional prep schools that act as bloodlines to private universities. But as I finished up my days at IHS, I found my mailbox filled with letters from the likes of Brown University, Butler, Notre Dame, Middlebury, Cornell, Washington & Lee, and other fine academic institutions. If it were not for my participation in lacrosse, I find it hard to believe that those highly regarded academic institutions would have been seeking my attention versus the other way around.

I chose to play lacrosse at Butler University, as it was the best balance between on the field opportunity and academic opportunity.  Some in my inner network condemned the decision arguing “Cornell will give you so much more post-collegiate opportunity!” Little did they know how deep the lacrosse bloodlines run. Fast forward to my senior year at Butler, and I was literally doing an interview with an executive from a major investment bank in a hotel room the night before the Duke game in Durham. The ONLY reason I got that opportunity was because of my lacrosse connections.

The interview worked out and I started working on Wall Street for Deutsche Bank in 2005. Eleven years later my former manager asked me to start a Hedge fund with him and none of this would have happened if it were not for the lacrosse community.

Lacrosse not only helps maintain a healthy physical and mental lifestyle, it helps empower our youth, it helps mentor our young adults, it helps drive growth in local economies.

Our mission is to develop positive life and leadership skills amongst current and future lacrosse enthusiasts.– “From the Faceoff X to the Boardroom”
